Summary:

A provision of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act enables taxpayers to defer recognition of capital gains that they invest in Qualified Opportunity Funds that, in turn, invest in properties and businesses in designated Opportunity Zones. This provision is expected to stimulate significant development in Opportunity Zones – and to provide substantial capital gains tax relief for taxpayers. Treasury and the IRS just issued proposed regulations to provide guidance as to how this works.
